Mind launches year-long inquiry into AI and mental health after Google AI Overviews exposé
UK mental health charity Mind is launching a year-long commission examining AI and mental health, the first globally. The inquiry follows a Guardian investigation showing Google AI Overviews gave "very dangerous" mental health advice to 2 billion monthly users.
Mind experts tested common mental health search queries and within two minutes found AI Overviews claiming starvation was healthy, that mental health problems are caused by chemical imbalances, and that 60% of benefit claims for mental health are malingering. Google removed some but not all problematic AI Overviews after the original investigation.
