Hassabis says memory shortage is creating an AI 'choke point' even for Google
Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis told CNBC that the entire AI supply chain for memory chips is constrained, limiting both deployment and research. Google sees "so much more demand" for Gemini than it can serve, and the shortage constrains experimentation with new ideas at scale.
Even Google's custom TPUs can't fully insulate the company from memory bottlenecks. Hassabis said the market comes down to "a few suppliers of a few key components," with costs skyrocketing and products tied up across the industry.
