Nadella reveals Bill Gates said OpenAI bet would "burn this billion dollars"

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella disclosed that Bill Gates warned him the $1B OpenAI investment in 2019 would be money burned, since OpenAI was still a nonprofit at the time. "In retrospect, who would have thought? I didn't put in a billion dollars saying, 'Oh yeah, this is going to be a hundred bagger,'" Nadella said. Microsoft eventually invested $13B total. The company started reaping returns in October when OpenAI restructured, giving Microsoft a 27% stake.
