Brain-computer implant lets paralysed man feed himself and feel touch
A man paralysed from the chest down regained the ability to move his arms, feed himself, and drink from a cup through a double neural bypass brain-computer interface. Implanted electrodes detect movement intent and route signals to his arms, while feedback signals recreate the sensation of touch, letting him feel his sister's hand and his dog's fur.
Developed at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, the system appears to have partly rewired his nervous system, restoring some function that persists even when switched off. Researchers say it could apply to millions needing movement and sensory restoration.
