xAI open-sources coding agent Grok-Build after it uploaded users' private files

xAI open-sourced its terminal coding agent Grok Build on GitHub under an Apache 2.0 license after users discovered the tool was uploading entire local directories, including SSH keys, password databases, and personal photos, to xAI's Google Cloud servers. Elon Musk said all uploaded user data would be deleted, and xAI disabled the upload feature before publishing roughly 844,530 lines of Rust source code. The agent reads and edits codebases, runs shell commands, and manages long-running coding tasks locally, interactively or headlessly, and can now run entirely offline. Data storage has been off by default since July 12, though remnants of the disabled upload function remain visible in the now-public code.
