AMD buys Taalas to etch AI models directly into silicon
AMD is acquiring Canadian startup Taalas, which hardwires individual AI models into chips rather than running them on general-purpose accelerators. The approach trades flexibility for throughput and power efficiency, giving AMD a second class of inference silicon to sell into data centers alongside its Instinct line.
The deal lands as inference, not training, becomes the volume business, and as hyperscalers push custom accelerators to escape Nvidia pricing. Baking a fixed model into hardware only pays off if that model stays deployed long enough to amortize the mask costs, a bet on model lifecycles lengthening.
