DeepMind's WeatherNext gains a full extra day of cyclone forecast accuracy, model open-sourced
Google DeepMind published a Nature paper showing WeatherNext hit state-of-the-art accuracy on cyclone track, intensity, and wind structure, and is open sourcing the model. Its three-day forecasts match what prior models could only deliver at two days, a jump the team equates to roughly a decade of meteorological progress.
The work pairs DeepMind and Google Research with forecasters at the National Hurricane Center, CIRA, and the UK Met Office. During the 2025 season the model helped the NHC predict Hurricane Melissa's rapid intensification and Jamaica landfall in advance. Tropical cyclones have killed more than 700,000 people and caused $1.4 trillion in losses over 50 years, so an extra day of warning translates directly into evacuation time.
