Musk details a plan to build AI compute satellites on the moon
Elon Musk laid out SpaceX's plan to deploy a robot workforce on the moon and build a mass accelerator there, shipping components to the lunar regolith via Starship. The goal is manufacturing AI compute satellites at a scale Earth-based factories could not sustain, mining regolith for aluminum, titanium, and silicon. "I know this sounds totally nuts," he told investors on SpaceX's first earnings call as a public company.
The plan appears in SpaceX's pre-IPO regulatory filings in drier language, describing "factories to produce large-scale AI compute satellites" as a pillar of strategy. "We are going to land a lot of tonnage on the moon. We're going to build the factories on the moon. The robots will be helpful with that."
