OpenAI's first device is a doughnut-shaped smart speaker priced above $300
OpenAI's Jony Ive-designed hardware is essentially a display-less smart speaker: battery-powered, doughnut-shaped, roughly the size of a hockey puck, and built from high-quality metal. It will carry a camera system, sensors, lights, and moving parts that animate on their own to signal when the device is responding. Expected price is $300 to $400, with a 2027 launch.
It is designed to be carried around the home one-handed, working like ChatGPT voice mode but with models tuned for more humanlike interactivity. Amazon's Echo line spans $40 to $240, and smart speakers have historically been unprofitable, making the premium positioning a deliberate bet that a ChatGPT-native device is a different product category. OpenAI has said this is the first of a "family of devices."
