OpenAI Codex surpasses 1.6M weekly active users, launches Windows app
OpenAI's Codex coding agent now has over 1.6M weekly active users, tripling since GPT-5.3 Codex launched in early February. The Mac app exceeded 1M downloads in its first week, and over 500K developers had signed up for the Windows waiting list before its launch. Cisco, Nvidia, Ramp, and Rakuten have deployed Codex across their teams.
The Windows version features a custom OS-level sandbox (open-sourced on GitHub) that lets AI agents run natively in PowerShell without requiring WSL. OpenAI's Codex lead described the tool as "becoming the standard agent" the company plans to expand beyond coding into broader enterprise workflows.
